What is included in each tour?
Accommodation, transportation (not including flights to the destination), and a range of activities are included in each tour (varies per tour).
What is not included in each tour?
Food, alcohol, optional activities, travel insurance, visas, flight to and from destination, and anything else not on the list of included items will not be included in the tours.
Is there an age restriction for the tours?
At this time we are only accepting travelers between the ages of 21-35 years old with the exception of our Vietnam, Historical Europe, and Peru Trekking tours, which are ages 21+.
Are there any other restrictions on who can take these tours?
We are a non-discriminatory company which welcomes all genders, sexual orientations, religions, and ethnicities. However, our tours consist of walking, carrying travel backpacks, taking public transportation, and other potentially strenuous activities; we require that you are physically able to do so without any assistance from your guides.
What language will be spoken on the tour?
Our guides are English speakers so the tour will be conducted entirely in English.
Are flights to the tour included in the cost?
No, flights to and from the start/end point destination are not included in the cost of the tour.
When do we pay for the tour?
A $250 deposit is required to book your spot. Your remaining balance will be split evenly into thirds and paid at the 6 month, 3 month, and 1 month mark prior to tour start date. If you book your tour past any of these deadlines, you will pay everything due up to that point.
What if I realize I can’t take the tour, but I’ve already paid my deposit...Is my deposit refundable?
Your deposit is non-refundable, but it is transferable (up until 1 month prior to tour start date), meaning you can book another tour with us in the future and use that already paid deposit for a future tour. All later balance payments are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you are physically unable to take the tour because of an unforeseen medical emergency, we will make an exception with the proper documentation.
Who will be leading the tours?
Each of the tours will be led by experienced and passionate travelers who are determined to show all of our participants what travel is truly about.
How many people will be on each tour?
There will be a maximum of 10 people on each tour. This does not include the tour guide and guide assistant.
Can I book multiple tours?
Of course you can book multiple tours! Flights/transportation to the next tour destination will not be covered, but we will issue you a 5% discount code to use when booking your next tour(s). This discount cannot be applied to your first tour booked and cannot be used with another discount code.

What type of accomodation will we be staying in?
You will be staying in primarily hostels, with a few exceptions in certain locations where hostels aren’t available. Hostels are youth accommodation popular with travelers due to their social atmosphere and inexpensive lodging. Please be aware that this means you will be sleeping in dormitory style rooms with other people. You will most likely only be sharing rooms with other travelers on your Fernweh Backpackers tour. If you would like to request to stay in private rooms, that can be arranged for a higher cost. Please contact us for more details about that.
I have never stayed in a hostel, what can I expect?
The hostels for your tour were chosen for their atmosphere, safety, amenities, and price. Hostels are usually dorm style rooms which means bunk beds, shared bathrooms, and possibly up to 12 people per room. However, some hostels are more luxurious than others and your bed may have amenities like curtains and your own personal outlets.
What happens if I get separated from my tour group?
We will provide wristbands with a local phone number for your tour guide and tour assistant, so if you are separated from your group you will have assistance. Just ask a nice local to borrow their phone! 🙂
Do we need travel insurance?
We require that everyone either purchases travel insurance, or that their health insurance plan covers them overseas. We recommend going with World Nomads, as they are an internationally known and trusted travel insurance company.
How will I know what to bring with me on a tour?
We will be sending a packing list specific to each tour by email after you have booked to help you figure out what you should bring with you on your trip.
Is it okay if I have never backpacked before?
It is absolutely okay if you have never backpacked before! We welcome people with all different levels of travel experience; from the novice to the nomad.

Do I need to have a negative COVID-19 test to attend this tour?
Yes, you need to have a negative PCR test result, taken within 72 hours of your flight. Antigen tests are not accepted. PCR test is still required even if you do have your COVID-19 vaccine.
Do I need to be vaccinated for COVID-19 to attend this tour?
Being vaccinated is highly recommended, but only required based on the destination of your tour. Many countries require a COVID-19 vaccine to enter, even with a negative PCR test result. Double check your tour and country information to find out more.
What steps has Fernweh Backpackers taken to ensure my safety regarding COVID-19?
All tour guides and guide assistants will be required to have both of their COVID-19 vaccines, as well as their negative PCR test result. We have also been very diligent in preparing our tours for 2022, in order to make sure we don’t go to any countries or regions that can jeopardize your health and safety.
Will masks be mandatory on the tour?
We will be following the mask mandates in whatever region we are traveling in at that time. We require that you bring masks with you on whatever tour you take with us.
What happens if I have a positive PCR test result and can’t take the tour?
If you show us proper documentation, proving that you have COVID-19 and can’t take the tour, we will refund you the entirety of your tour price, MINUS whatever has already been paid to various accommodation, transportation, and activities as deposits on our end. You also will NOT be refunded your $250 tour deposit, but that $250 can be transferred to use as a deposit for a future tour.
What happens if I contract COVID-19 during my tour?
This is why we require travel insurance for all of our participants, and also why we highly recommend being fully vaccinated before the tour start date. If you follow our recommendations in taking the proper precautions, this should not be an issue.
